Canals are man-made waterways originally built for transporting goods by boat. Today they provide excellent fishing opportunities across the UK and are home to a wide range of coarse fish species.
Unlike rivers, canals usually have very little current, although some water movement may be present due to locks, boat traffic, or water management.
Canals can vary greatly in size. Some are narrow and shallow, while others are wide and deep enough to resemble small rivers.
Because canals are often heavily fished and located in populated areas, the fish can become cautious. Successful canal fishing often requires accurate feeding, light tackle, and careful presentation.
Anglers fishing canals will commonly encounter:
Towpaths – The bank originally used by horses pulling barges. This is usually the most accessible fishing bank.
Boat traffic – Passing boats can disturb the water and temporarily push fish away from the bank.
Locks and lock cuts – These areas can hold fish due to increased water movement and oxygen levels.
Boats and moorings – Fish often hold around moored boats, ropes, and structures.
Shelf or canal edge – Many canals have a shallow shelf before dropping into deeper water in the centre channel.
Canals can contain a wide range of coarse fish including:
Roach
Perch
Bream
Tench
Pike
Carp (in some canals)
Zander
Smaller species such as gudgeon and rudd may also be present.
Canal fishing is often about precision and patience rather than power fishing.
Common tactics include:
Pole fishing
Waggler float fishing
Light feeder fishing
Feeding little and often is usually more effective than introducing large amounts of bait.
Canal towpaths can be busy with boating traffic, cyclists, pedestrians with and without dogs so care and general courtious by all should be used by all, leaving expensive pole sections or pole rollers scattered on the bank is an acciden waiting to happen.
