Barbel are long, powerful river fish with a bronze-brown back and pale underside. They have four small whisker-like barbels around their mouth, used to detect food along the riverbed. Their streamlined shape and strong tail make them well suited to fast-flowing water.
Habitat & Behaviour
Barbel prefer clean, well-oxygenated rivers with gravel bottoms. They are often found in faster glides, near weirs, and in deeper runs.
They feed along the bottom on insect larvae, worms, and small invertebrates, often becoming more active in low light or after dark.
