Identification & Variants
Carp come in several varieties. All share the same basic body shape and habits but differ mainly in scale pattern, colouration, and appearance:
Common Carp: Standard carp with large, uniform bronze-golden scales and two pairs of barbels. Widely stocked in UK waters.
Mirror Carp: Irregular, patchy scales scattered across the body, often with large bare areas. Popular for their distinctive appearance.
Leather Carp: Almost entirely scaleless, smooth and shiny. Rare and highly sought after for their unusual look.
Linear Carp: Single row of large scales along the lateral line, combining traits of mirror and leather carp. Often found in fisheries.
Ghost Carp: Pale, silvery-white carp, selectively bred for ornamental purposes. Body shape similar to common carp.
Habitat & Behaviour
All carp species prefer calm or slow-moving waters with soft, muddy or silty bottoms. They feed on worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans, plant material, and prepared baits such as boilies, pellets, or sweetcorn. Carp are mainly bottom feeders and become more active in warmer months.
