Grass Carp
Scientific Name: Ctenopharyngodon idella
UK Status: Introduced / Stocked (mainly for vegetation control)
Quick Facts
Typical Size: 10–20 lb
Specimen Size: 40 lb+ possible
Best Season: Late spring to early autumn
Habitat: Stillwaters, lakes, slow rivers
Identification
Grass Carp are large, elongated fish with a silvery-green back and pale silver belly. They have large, smooth scales and a slightly downturned mouth adapted for feeding on plant material.
They are herbivorous, unlike most coarse fish, and can grow very large in the right conditions.
Habitat & Behaviour
Grass Carp prefer warm, calm waters with abundant vegetation, which forms the bulk of their diet.
They feed mainly on aquatic plants and rarely take natural animal baits. They are generally slow-moving and schooling in younger stages, with larger adults often solitary.
Best Baits & Methods
Grass Carp are primarily targeted with specialist plant-based baits:
Boilies or pellets designed for carp
Sweetcorn or maize
Vegetables (lettuce, peas) in some fisheries
Methods usually involve ledgering or surface feeding setups.
Tackle Guide
Rod: Medium to heavy carp rod
Line: 15–30 lb
Hooks: Size 6–10 depending on bait
Strong tackle is essential for larger specimens, and careful handling is recommended.
Notes
Grass Carp are stocked in some UK waters for weed control. Always check fishery rules, as in many places catch-and-release only is enforced.
