Dave's Top Tip: Don'y Trust Your Rig
Always check your rig before it goes out. Drop it into a clear shallow margin or a bucket of water and watch how it behaves when it settles.
Look at how the hookbait sits, how the hook links lay, and whether anything looks unnatural or under tension. If it doesn’t look right in front of you, it won’t look right on the lake bed either — and fish will notice it.
Taking a minute to check your presentation can make a big difference between getting ignored and getting picked up.
Shropshire offers a strong mix of natural river fishing and well-established stillwater venues, making it a very versatile county for coarse anglers. The landscape is shaped heavily by rivers such as the Severn and Teme, which provide long stretches of flowing water holding barbel, chub, roach, dace and perch. These rivers vary from fast, shallow runs to deeper, slower glides, meaning conditions can change quickly and reward anglers who are prepared to adapt their approach.
Outside the rivers, Shropshire also has a growing selection of stillwater and club fisheries, ranging from small countryside pools to more developed day-ticket waters. These tend to be quieter and less pressured than heavily commercialised venues, offering a more natural style of fishing where reading the water, location, and presentation often matters more than heavy baiting or repetitive tactics.
